PRESS: THE KNOT BOSTON MAGAZINE SPRING/SUMMER 2013 + FALL/WINTER 2012

Dec 18, 2012 | Editorial, News

When I lived in Seattle, where I started my photography business, I had one goal that I just could not seem to achieve: to have my photos published in a glossy wedding magazine.  I didn’t tell anyone at the time, but I was beyond frustrated that my work always went unnoticed by the magazine world – and worse, that the beautiful, unique, awesome weddings that my clients so carefully designed and planned went unnoticed.  I eventually gave up worrying about it, and I told myself that if you needed to be on the scene, or have connections, to get published then maybe it wasn’t worth worrying about.

I stopped spending the hours it takes to put together a beautiful magazine submission … the carefully curated collection of images, the pages of thumbnails on glossy photo paper, the “teaser” collage of favorite images to get the wedding noticed (and to show that my images were a clean and cohesive set, not muddled with a mixture of crazy actions and effects).  It just didn’t seem to be worth the huge effort, and, truth be told, it’s a hell of a lot less depressing when yet again your weddings have been overlooked when you hadn’t submitted them in the first place!

Imagine my surprise, then, when out of the blue a magazine editor in the Boston area emailed me about one of my weddings.  It was mid summer last year, and a momentous occasion.  I was beaming.  My first wedding was published by Southern New England Weddings Destination Edition that fall and you can see my excited blog post about it here.  Since then, I’ve had a few more requests for submissions, and a number of real wedding features.  The crazy thing is that since making that decision not to chase magazines, they’ve come to me instead.

Earlier this year, The Knot Boston magazine asked to feature a couple of my photos in articles; you can see those below:

Above is one of my favorite images from Chrissy and Jason’s beautiful Turner Hill wedding in Ipswich, MA; below, on the right page, is my photo of the Wentworth by the Sea Hotel:

And then a week or two ago The Knot sent me the 2013 Spring/Summer edition which features Emily and Mike’s lovely real wedding at MIT Chapel and the Exchange Conference Center:

I’ll be posting some more features soon … including my very first magazine cover!!

  1. I almost find it hard to believe you were never published in Seattle/Washington because when I was planning my wedding in ’08 you were THE photographer everyone on my message board wanted, myself included! To me, your images are very iconic and even though my wedding planning days are long gone, I love looking at your photos and look forward to each time you post new ones.
