I’m really enjoying looking through my old weddings and engagement sessions for these Throwback Thursday posts. Colleen and Chris’ wedding from 2008 is still one of my all-time favorites. They planned an intimate – strike that, tiny – wedding in Seattle with just their two best friends and their pastor who flew in from Arizona for the day. They wanted photographic coverage of the day, from the getting ready photos at their suite in a waterside hotel, through the first look, the outdoor ceremony, and ending with dinner (which I was asked not to document, but to join!)
During one of our initial emails, Colleen had asked me if I could think of any good outdoor spots for them to get married in Seattle. I listed three of my favorite places, including the bluff at Discovery Park: “(it’s a) huge park with a bluff overlooking (Puget) Sound, and a pebble beach with an old lighthouse”. They settled on Discovery. What I hadn’t realized is that they had made that decision based solely on my recommendation – it made me a touch nervous arriving with them at their ceremony spot for the very first time! Luckily, they loved it – and it really was the most perfect setting for their incredibly emotional wedding.
This photo is one of my favorite moments from the day – right after the kiss was announced, Colleen jumped up into Chris’ arms. The joy is so evident, not just on Colleen and Chris’ faces, but also on those of their best friends and pastor. Would I have done anything differently now? Yes, I’d have shot from a slightly lower angle, so that their heads wouldn’t be intersecting the horizon, however I’m still proud of this image five and a half years later.
After sending out their full gallery, I received the most wonderful email from Colleen. I may have teared up a little, re-reading it: “Kate, We just spent the last hour completely re-living our entire wedding from beginning to end. You did such an amazing job capturing the entire thing. We feel so completely blessed to have had you be a part of it … I really am at a loss for words right now. We LOVE every single shot. You are so incredibly talented my friend. Fun news. John and Leena (Best Man and Matron of Honor) were actually pregnant at our wedding. We had no idea but they told us a few weeks ago and she is due in December. So we actually had three witnesses – and the world’s best photographer. All my Love, Colleen.”
And with that I’m off to photograph another very intimate wedding with seven guests at Cambridge City Hall – happy wedding day Dave and Meredith!
