On a Friday afternoon a couple of weeks ago, I got to photograph a very special elopement in Boston. A colleague of mine had been scheduled to photograph this tiny wedding, but a few days before she was rushed into hospital and so she posted on one of our networks that she needed someone to take over her duties. Many of my couples ask me what happens if I’m suddenly sick on the wedding day – well, we help each other out, and I was one of many volunteers for this particular wedding. It was also super fun getting to work alongside my “Photography BFF” Leah for the afternoon. We make a pretty good team I think!

Sonja and Jonathan live in Boston but they didn’t want a big wedding with all the craziness that surrounds it. As musicians, they’ve been to more weddings than they can count, and four out of their five parents are pastors! Despite this previous (over-)exposure to weddings, these two sweethearts were still super excited to get married, and they were beaming when we met up with them at City Hall in Boston.

The short, sweet ceremony was held in one of the back offices on the 6th floor at City Hall. I loved that they had written their own vows, and the officiant was a delight to work with. There was a lot of emotion in that tiny room!

I grabbed this next photo as Sonja and Jonathan exited City hall – look how excited Sonja is here!

And a quick celebratory kiss on City Hall Plaza:

The bulk of our time with Jonathan and Sonja was spent taking couples portraits around a few special spots in Boston. We started out at the Public Garden where we found one last patch of these purple alliums still in bloom:

I love how they look at each other …

A couple of last photos on a bench by the pond …

… then we headed over to the Boston Public Library for some cool architectural shots, making a couple of stops en route:

Even the steps at the BPL are cool!

The entrance hall at the library:

The courtyard at the library:

And one last favorite to end with. Thank you Sonja and Jonathan for being SO awesome to work with – I hope you’ve enjoyed these teaser photos! Congratulations and love to you both!
